New Canaan 4th Of July Fireworks: A Family Guide to Celebrating Independence Day

TeamUncategorized

Every year in New Canaan, families gather from the local community and surrounding area for the 4th of July Fireworks. This celebration dates back to 1980 when the first fireworks show took place in Waveny Park, marking the start of a new tradition. The event is wildly anticipated each year by patrons of all ages, and this year is a significant milestone for our country, making it extra special. Join us on July 4th, 2026 at Waveny Park as we celebrate 250 years of independence.

What to Expect at the New Canaan 4th Of July Fireworks Celebration

The Fireworks Celebration is one of the most popular events of the season in New Canaan, and this year is even more momentous as it is the 250th anniversary of the day we declared our independence. On July 4th, 1776, 250 years ago, the founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, creating a new nation.

As we celebrate this year, you can expect a wide range of family friendly attractions including bouncy houses, food trucks, live music, and entertainment. There is never a dull moment throughout the evening as everyone eagerly awaits the fireworks show to commemorate our nation’s birthday.

The community atmosphere brings families, friends, and neighbors together as we celebrate the history of our great country.

Planning Ahead for a Smooth Family Experience

If you’re planning to join in the festivities, the gates open at 5:00 PM on the evening of July 4th. We request that you enter the park through the South Avenue entrance. Please note that Lapham Road is an exit only gate. Arrive early to get a good viewing spot for the show.

You will need to purchase a Waveny Park pass to attend the event. They are $40 per car or group when purchased in advance and available for New Canaan residents only (ID required). On the day of the event they can be purchased for $50. Please display your pass on your car dashboard, or have it ready to show at the gate if walking. Only one pass per car or group is required. Passes can also be purchased online. If purchased online before June 20th, 2026 you will receive your pass by mail.

In case of rain the fireworks will be rescheduled for July 5th or 11th, to be announced.

Making the Most of the Evening With Young Children

Guests, especially those with children, should be sure to pack essentials such as blankets and chairs for comfort. There will be plenty of food trucks onsite, but it is still a good idea to pack snacks for children to appease particular appetites.

Hearing protection is also a wise choice for people of all ages, especially young children. In addition to being loud and potentially frightening, fireworks can cause irreversible hearing damage.

By planning ahead you can be sure to create positive holiday memories as a family.
